C5 Curriculum Overview

Introduced in the summer of 2003 in partnership with the National C5 Association, the progressive C5 curriculum was developed with input from nationally recognized youth development industry leaders and represents the second half of the Crossroads 10-year program. 

 
Year 1 (Flints)

Camp Leadership U – Leading Myself:  Rising eighth graders begin the C5 journey with 3 weeks at summer camp where they learn about themselves, develop fundamental leadership skills and create personalized leadership plans that detail their academic,  extra curricular and community service goals for the school year. During the school year, teens participate in monthly community and group learning experiences reflective of the year’s theme, complete 30+ community service hours, and implement personal leadership plans.

 

Year 2 (Lantern)

Camp Leadership U – Leading Others: The second year of the program emphasizes ongoing relationships with staff and peers. The four-week summer camp experience challenges to use their evolving communications and leadership skills to put on a theater production in just 24 hours, plan and prepare for an off-site trip, and to begin providing leadership for camp activities. The school year activities continue and include initial planning and preparation for next summer’s back-country leadership adventure. Community service requirements increase to 40 hours and teens continue to progress and report on their personal leadership plan

Year 3 (Hammer) 

Bridges – Expanding My Horizons: During the summer before tenth grade, participants are challenged to demonstrate their leadership skills as they finalize planning and preparation for the NOLS Leadership Trek, a 9-day back-country leadership adventure. The trip provides real challenges and real consequences as teens make decisions, solve problems, and learn to work together effectively. Throughout their sophomore year, teens collaborate with other youth to plan a community service project and lay the foundation for their upcoming college campus tour. Volunteerism requirements increase to 50 hours.

 

Year 4 (Compass) 

Road to College – Exploring My Future: Prior to their junior year in high school, our young adults move away from the outdoor camp experience and explore choices for postsecondary education and career opportunities. They embark on a 10-day college campus tour that takes them to regional schools and allows them to get a taste of what college life will be like.  Along the way, they engage in a volunteer service project in one of the communities they visit.  During the year, teens work with their Leadership Coach who helps them identify options as they put their plans together for the future. They visit additional colleges and trade schools, participate in career exploration seminars and meet with experts in different fields, and complete 60 hours of volunteer service.


Year 5 (Medallion) 

A.C.T. Now Summit – Engaging My Community:  The final year of the program focuses on community advocacy and is themed “A.C.T. Now — Actively Change Tomorrow”. During this year, participants engage in a one week community leadership experience designed to show how decisions are made and how needs are met in the communities where they live.  They also plan and fundraise for a service learning trip during the April vacation of their senior year.  Following their Summit, teens are able to join the staff at Camp Wing or Camp Mitton as a Junior Staff member, continuing their professional and career development and earning money for college.  School year programming includes continued opportinies to meet community leaders and legislators, college access and preparedness programming and career exploration seminars.
