Crossroads 5th Annual Golf Classic Raised More Than $230,000

Type:  Press Releases
Crossroads celebrated its 5th Annual Crossroads C5 New England Golf Classic at the Black Rock Country Club in Hingham on July 24, 2017. With more than 100 guests that day and the support of more than 30 sponsors we raised over $230,000 to support Crossroads’ work with under-resourced, Massachusetts youth.

All of the proceeds from this event directly impact the lives of over 1,000 under-resourced youth living in Massachusetts. Thanks to our long-standing partnership with the Rodman Ride for Kids, every dollar we raise through this event receives an additional matching gift.

Dedication was the name of the game this year. Despite the cold weather and pouring rain, golfers came out to support our youth, proving that they’re dedicated to a better future for our young people. While we had to cut the tournament short, everyone was a winner for sticking it out and playing as long as we could.

Following the round of golf was the speaker portion of the day. Kermelle Billy, a C5 Leaders graduate, Class of 2014, shared her Crossroads journey with the room. Originally from Dorchester, Kermelle was nominated into the Crossroads C5 Leaders program from Crossroads Camps. Coming to camp as a soft-spoken, self-conscious, and reserved child, Crossroads and the C5 Leaders have helped transform Kermelle into a confident, assertive, and empowered young woman.

“The Kermelle you see and hear speaking to you today is a much more confident, driven, and understanding young woman. I know that wherever life may lead, I will always have my C5 and Crossroads family to support and mentor me no matter how long ago I’ve graduated."

Kermelle has since come back to work summers as a counselor at Camp Lapham.
“Being able to return to Camp Lapham this summer and working with our teens in the C5 program has been very nostalgic and feels like I’ve come full circle. This summer, I’ve been mentoring our teens who are preparing to go on the biggest trek in their C5 journey. And though many are nervous, seeing their beaming faces after a seven-day trek and hearing them say “We did it!” makes all the tiring and hot summer days at camp all the more worthwhile.”

The success of the event is the result of the hard work of the Golf Classic Committee, led by Crossroads Trustees Steve Stewart and Former Trustee Tim Carroll. 2017 Golf Classic Committee – Brendan Brazel, Mike Mottau, Mike Phalen, Mort Fearey, Peter Dalrymple, Tom Davidson

“At the end of this fifth year of the Crossroads C5 New England Golf Classic, we will have raised over $1 million dollars. All in, it costs approximately $4,000 for one C5 Leader to go through a full year of our programming. So that means that over the past five years this event has provided life changing opportunities for more than 250 high-potential, under-resourced youth," says Crossroads President Deb Samuels. "This year's Golf Classic has been an enormous success thanks to the amazing work of our Golf Classic Committee and we could not be more grateful as their hard work will allow us to help teens prepare for success in college, work and life."
